GDPR Info
In the EU, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regulates how personal data may be handled by companies and organizations based in the EU, or who offer services in the EU. (Source: Who does the data protection law apply to?) Both the 5th of July Foundation and the server that runs this service are based in the EU (Sweden), so the data protection law applies to us.
The personal data covered by the GDPR is described as “any information that relates to an identified or identifiable living individual.” However, if the personal data has been “rendered anonymous in such a way that the individual is not or no longer identifiable,” this information is no longer considered personal data (unless the anonymization is reversible). Handling such data is therefore not regulated by the GDPR. (Source: What is personal data?)
How our service works
Our service lets the users upload files (or written or pasted text, henceforth also called files), and share them with a link. By using the link, another user (or the same user) can download the file, or delete it. The files shared through our service are encrypted, which renders any personal data anonymous.
The file is encrypted on the user’s own computer, before it is uploaded to our server. Likewise, the file is decrypted on the user’s own computer, after the encrypted file has been downloaded from our server.
This means that even if files containing personal data are shared through our service, we do not handle any personal data since the files on our server are encrypted, and thereby anonymized. The anonymization is irreversible for us, for its whole lifetime on our server. The encrypted file is automatically deleted from our server after twelve hours (we may change this up or down a bit in the future, or give the user several options), if the user has not already deleted it.
Conclusion
In conclusion, since we do not handle any personal data, this service does not fall under the scope of the GDPR.
